MCALLEN- The VAMOS scholarship is intended to help Hispanic high school students here in the Valley to achieve a higher education by awarding them a four year scholarship. They hope after receiving their bachelors degree students will return to the community and become future leaders.
"In this area if we're going to get any bigger we're going have to meet the needs just like any other city, we're going to need a workforce that is competent and have a higher education level," said Martiza Rodriguez who is the Executive Director for VAMOS.
" The deadline is April first, just right around the corner, and it's really one of the later applications. a lot of the scholarships have already past," said Rodriguez.
Candidates must meet the following criteria to be considered.
- Students must be a graduating Senior from Hidalgo, Starr or Cameron county.
- Be from Hispanic descent and be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident.
- Seniors who apply must be in the top 25 % of their graduating class and meet the minimum SAT or ACT scores set by the institution they're wanting to go.
- students must have already applied for the FAFSA and be Pell Grant eligible.
"We got over a thousand applications that were submitted unfortunately students need to read all of the details and information that is being requested of out of those one thousand only about four hundred were actually qualified because they submitted the rest of the documents that we requested from them," said Rodriguez.
Last year 30 scholarships were awarded to students and the funding for the scholarships comes from their annual fundraiser each year. Once awarded students must report to the organization on their academic success every semester and maintain a 2.75 GPA at the college level and if you already in college and need scholarship money, VAMOS also has endowments that could help out.
