If you're trying to reach 911 in parts of Cameron County, you won't be able to get through tonight because a cut fiber cable. Early this evening, Emergency Management crews say, along Business 83 in Weslaco, construction crews accidentally cut a cable, knocking out all 911 service in the area. Emergency Management crews say construction workers need to be more careful when digging.
911 service, and some cell phone service, was affected in Weslaco and La Feria. When this happens, residents can not get through to 911 when dialing. Authorities say it doesn't work because 911 isn't based locally, it's a long-distance call. Authorities are asking residents, with any emergency, to call the police department.
News Center 23 went to the La Feria Police Department and spoke with dispatcher, Sabrina Lopez, about the problems it poses when there's no 911. She says this definitely isn't the first time 911 service has been affected by construction crews accidentally cutting fiber cables.
If you have a 911 emergency, and live in this area, you're asked to call the La Feria Police Department at 956-797-3121. There is no word yet, on when 911 service will be restored.
