84-year-old Arizona man describes five days in the desert following a car crash.
An 84-year old Arizona man is lucky to be alive after being stuck in a desert ditch in his car for more than five nights.
Hank Morello says he prayed to St. Anthony, the patron of lost causes, for someone to find him and save his life.
Amazingly they did, and he survived.
Last Monday the Anthem resident got lost on his way home from his favorite restaurant in Cave Creek.
After five days without food or water Morello, a diabetic, said he needed to come up with a plan.
"My windshield washer, I broke the top off of the thing with a rock and sucked some of the water out of there," he said.
Doctors say it was an extremely dangerous move.
"Even very small amounts of antifreeze or windshield washer fluid can cause a lot of damage," warns Dr. Kevin Veale.
Finding a way to shield from the low temperatures was another challenge for hank.
He covered himself with his car's floor mats to stay warm.
He says the wait was agonizing.
"After the fifth day I says, this is it. If they don't find me by tonight I'm not gonna make another night out here," he recalls.
A group of hikers came across hank saturday morning.
He credits family and friends for keeping the search alive.
"There is somebody up there believe me, taking care of you. Don't give up hope that's all," he says.
