Senator John Kerry says the Mexican government needs help from the U.S. to fight powerful drug cartels.
Senator Kerry and other lawmakers went to a hearing in El Paso on Monday to talk about the U.S./Mexico violence. Lawmakers say the U.S. is responsible for a majority of the high-powered weapons that cartels are using against the Mexican military and police.
One official says the U.S. needs to ratify a treaty over cross border weapons smuggling, so the guns can be traced.
