Powerful winds blowing in all directions pushed flames closer to buildings and homes at a large grassfire off of Wilson road in Harlingen on Tuesday.
Some residents took action before the flames could creep up by picking up a hose and getting the ground wet. Within minutes fire crews were also on the scene to help break up the fire from inching any closer to homes. Low lying flames could be seen and put out, but deeper in the thick brush flames were sending thick black plumes of smoke into the air.
Fire officials say that the high powered winds and extremely dry vegetation from last week's winter storm only added fuel to the fire.
