The body of 29-year-old Benjamin Soto was found inside a black pick-up truck along Moore Field, near 8 ½ mile line north of Alton.
Soto was quickly identified due to his extensive criminal history. Hidalgo County Sheriff, Lupe Treviño, tells us Soto has been arrested for deadly conduct, unlawfully carrying a weapon, attempted capital murder, aggravated assault, possession of marijuana, delivery of marijuana, money laundering, etc.
“I believe Mr. Soto was also involved in the shooting with Edinburg PD two years ago on the expressway. He’s got like 17 charges pending against him or had anyway.”
The sheriff's department received a call around 5:30 this morning about a suspicious vehicle abandoned alongside of the road but investigators are now learning the two men may have been killed hours earlier.
When investigators arrived at the scene, they discovered another body. Deputies found a man who was also shot, lying on the ground near a parked tractor trailer and the truck.
“We have strong suspicions that it was drug related though and may have other factors involved.”
The only information about the other victim is that he was from Honduras and was living with Soto. Treviño believes another man is responsible for the shootings but no arrests have been made.
Both murders mark 11th and 12th homicide for Hidalgo County this year. Anyone with information on this double homicide is urged to call Hidalgo County Crime Stoppers at: (956) 668-8477.
