Record low temperatures expected across the country.
Arctic air has worked its way into the Northeast, leaving dangerous sub-zero temperatures across the region.
The cold has turned deadly and forecasters now say there may be more misery ahead.
In suburban Washington there was new meaning to "arctic blast" as a massive water main ruptured.
The torrent ripped through the asphalt, overturning cars and destroying nearby businesses.
The beltway was brought to a standstill by the icy waters.
In New York a water main break and below freezing temperatures encased one car in inches of ice.
Some places saw the mercury plunge more than 20 degrees below zero, with wind chills down to -80.
In Manchester, Connecticut firefighters battled the bitter chill along with a blaze, while Amtrak suspended service in parts of the Northeast because of frozen signals and switches.
Adding insult to injury...another winter storm could soon follow the cold.
Forecasters say another system is now setting up for Wednesday, and while it may bring rain in places others could once again find themselves digging out.
