I've worked as a Burglary detective for 6 years here in the valley, not brownsville. I know one thing that works most of the time is a simple alarm system. I've interrogated so many suspects they all say the same thing. If they see an alarm sign in the front yard, they'll just hit the house next door. I'm not saying is 100 % proof. But it will deter the mayority of the burglars and at best will minimize the loss if you do get hit. Also, they could've mention a timer inside the house. I've told my victims so install a light timer on the living room and kitchen lights. The timer should turn on and off at random time and makes it seems that someone is inside the house. I can talk about this all day.....
