Year Old Survives Horrifying Ordeal
Woman spent two days pinned under partially submerged van.
A Mississippi woman is alive and recovering after being pinned under her van for nearly two days.
74-year-old Shirley Ann Smith was found Saturday, stuck under her vehicle in a creek bed in Moss Point, Mississippi.
Lt. Glenn Montgomery with the Moss Point Police Department got the call early Saturday morning.
Road crews had just found a van in a creek next to an I-10 on ramp in Moss Point.
"You could not see it from the road at all, the vehicle was submerged. Her arm was pinned under the tire for two days, so it didn't look very good," Montgomery said.
Officials say it happened when Smith pulled over to take a break from driving, but when she got out of the van, it rolled down to the creek, trapping her underneath it.
Even after two days without water, food or any help, officials say Smith was not only conscious, she was talkative.
"She wanted her hearing aid. She had to have her hearing aid, and she told a firefighter to look for it. She also wanted her medicine and purse taken to the hospital with her," said Montgomery. "She told us her name, some information, and we were amazed. It was a miracle she was doing as well as she was."
Officials say it took just about 15 minutes to get Smith out of there, but it was a delicate process.
"Her head was real close to the tire on the down slope, so we tried to raise the vehicle up. We made sure it was secure and everybody was safe, and then we lifted it up to move her arm out. It was close, it was tight, but we got it," Montgomery said.
