MCALLEN - Daniel Gutierrez,33, is a single parent with three young children. Gutierrez only has an 8th grade education. When he thought about getting his GED, he wasn't sure it was even possible.

"I laughed about it ya know, I was like there is no way. How could somebody like me whose been out for over two decades come back to something like this and uh and finish this? I was scared being a single parent," said Daniel Gutierrez, Workforce Solutions GED student.

Gutierrez is part of Workforce Solutions GED program, but with budget cuts happening, many programs

"We as a Workforce board in Lower Rio have been preparing for this for a few years now," said Bonnie Gonzalez, Workforce Solutions LRGV CEO.

Workforce Solutions predicts the cuts will come to through the Workforce Investment Act, which helps with job

"We actually have had to consolidate our GED classes. We were able to offer GED classes in every career center across the three county area, we are now only offering it in two," said Gonzalez.

Since the start of the GED program in 2007, 1200 people have gone through and received their GED. In this last fiscal year alone, 130,000 people have walked through these doors seeking some kind of help.

Gutierrez came in early in 2010, now he is only a month away from hopefully acquiring his GED. He said he's doing it for his three young children.

"Them seeing me do what I am doing, even they are always telling me, 'Dad, did you do your homework? Did you do your homework?' getting after me. I'm like, ok I need to show them something. So I think it's important for me to do this and get my education and show my kids that there's better lives out there," said Gutierrez.

There's no telling yet how detrimental these budget cuts will be, but Workforce Solutions said they aren't going anywhere and will continue to help the community and it's employers.
