HARLINGEN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — After news of Williams' suicide, mental health professionals in the Rio Grande Valley are speaking out about the stigma associated with mental illness and its prevalence in our area. Health professionals here say the stigma attached with depression and other mental disorders is the main reason people don't seek help.
"Depression is not a problem of the poor, it's a problem of everybody. It's no discriminator," said Ander Behavioral Center director Susan Ander. "It's an equal opportunity depression that you get, as evidenced by the really tragic loss of Robin Williams. You can have everything and have nothing."
Because of financial strains, the RGV only has a limited number of services offered to those suffering from mental health disorders, like depression.
Dr. Ander says the amount of people, especially men, seeking treatment for their depression has increased dramatically.
