HARLINGEN ,TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — The Harlingen Police Department continues to search for its next chief.
The former Harlingen police chief has rescinded the offer to take back his position.
In a letter to city leaders Wednesday, Tom Whitten wrote:
"After significant personal and professional deliberation, I am unable to accept your offer. I wish you continued success. Thank you so very much for all your support and understanding and please relay my apologies."
Whitten resigned back in December as Harlingen police chief to become commander of jail administration and support for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
Whitten said he left the Harlingen Police Department for family reasons.
On April 2, the Harlingen city commission unanimously voted to offer Whitten the job back.
Interim police chief Stephen Scot Mayer is currently leading the department.
The city manager says he will be reviewing who can permanently fill the police chief position.
