Weslaco's Interim City Manager Speaks About Lay-Offs

Five city employees in Weslaco do not have jobs tonight.
City leaders let the long-time employees go to save the budget.
This morning, City officials notified Weslaco's Police Chief and four other city employees, that they will no longer be working for the city.
The reason...Financial issues.
This shocking move, comes just weeks after former City Manager, Anthony Covacevich resigned and Interim City Manager, Francisco Castellanos filled his vacant seat.
Those laid off are: Public Works Director, David Salinas, Assistant Public Works Director, Oscar Garcia, Human Resources Director, Arnold Rodriguez, The City Manager's Secretary, Anne Mata, and Police Chief, J.D. Martinez.
Martinez's position will be temporarily filled by Weslaco's current Fire Chief, Art Avila.
With these lay-offs, officials say it'll save the city from their budget woes.
Some residents say, when you have new leaders, change is bound to happen.
Interim City Manager, Francisco Castellanos says, it's not about politics, what it comes down to is saving the city's budget.
These layoffs will save the city 500-Thousand dollars.
In addition to these layoffs, 30 other city employees, salaries were cut.
