Weslaco Police are investigating a fatal mobile home fire that claimed the life of an elderly woman.

Firefighters responded to a call at around 8:30 a.m. reporting a structure fire at Rio Valley Estates.  Someone was believed to be inside the burning trailer home.  When firefighters arrived at the scene, the thickness of the smoke prevented them from finding the woman.

The body of an elderly woman was discovered on the floor of the back bedroom.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine her cause of death.

"We're gonna treat it as a crime scene, we're gonna make sure all of the investigators get what they need, and it will be considered a crime scene until we determine otherwise," said Mike Kelley, Weslaco Chief of Police.

"There will be an autopsy done and so forth until we determine what the cause of death was, and at that point we'll either reclassify it or continue working it as a possible crime scene."
