Weslaco mayor steps down; seeks new position
WESLACO, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — The mayor of Weslaco is now the former mayor of Weslaco, but will act as mayor until November.
Miguel Wise resigned from his position this week to run for 92nd state district judge. Wise is challenged by Luis Singleterry - a judge in Pharr - and attorney Rey Ortiz. The governor is supposed to make an appointment for the open judicial seat.
If the governor doesn't choose somebody by January, then wise and his opponents won't have a position to run for.
"It is quite a gamble. But I think I owed it to the citizens of Weslaco to declare my intentions and withdraw before that term expired," Wise said. "Resigning as mayor was one of the most difficult things I've ever done."
Wise will handle many of the mayoral duties until an election is held in November.
