MCALLEN - There has been an absence of joy within holiday retail sales nationally.  According to national reports sales were up only seven tenths of a percent this year, making it the weakest in four years.

Analysts blame disrupting storms and economic uncertainty for lagging sales numbers.  Here locally some residents also believe that following the Newtown, CT shootings many were left without the holiday spirit.

Despite weak retail sales, some local chains say they don't feel affected and thank shoppers from Mexico for contributing in making their sales strong.

Meanwhile, the day after Christmas many stores were dealing with long return lines, as shoppers were looking to make exchanges or returns.

On Wallstreet, the Dow Jones fell 59 points shortly before noon on Wednesday.
