Veterans Unhappy with City of Mercedes War Memorial

Plans for a new veterans war memorial, in Mercedes, is causing a controversy from local vets because the memorial honors one local veteran.

Several veterans in the Valley are against the plan for city officials to build a three monument memorial at the local civic center honoring Vietnam veteran Guadalupe "Wally" Prado Jr. Veterans say they aren't against a new memorial but honoring just one person from the Valley just isn't fair.

War Memorial Project Director David Garza stated, "Vietnam war was not fought by only one person. Only one person in Mercedes did not die. We have a lot of veterans that died in Vietnam and they should all be honored." Project coordinators say they hope the city will finally form a committee as promised back in 2009. This will be the third veterans war memorial built in the City of Mercedes.
