To help boost dwindling summertime blood supplies in the Valley, the Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home will host a blood drive from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, July 11.

A blood mobile from United Blood Services will be parked in front of the home, located at 301 E. Yuma Ave., in McAllen. The public is invited to join staff and residents in rolling up their sleeves for the donation drive.

“There is always a shortage here in the Valley, but it gets worse this time of year,” said Jose Bustamante, representative for the Alfredo Gonzalez home. “Percentage-wise only 2 percent of the population donates here, while it’s 5 percent in the rest of the state.”

According to recent news reports, type O-negative blood is in particular demand, as it is a universal type that can be used in a trauma situation, such as a major traffic accident. A person needs blood every two to three seconds across the U.S. That demand increases during peak travel periods, such as the summer.

Donors are eligible to give once every eight weeks. They must be 16 years of age (and have parental consent between ages 16 and 18) and weigh at least 110 lbs. All donors will be screened to check overall health before being cleared to donate.

The Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home is where honor lives. The Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) houses and cares for Texas veterans through its eight Texas State Veterans Homes. Together, they serve more than a thousand veterans and their families needing long-term, high-quality care. For more information call 1-800-252-VETS (1-800-252-8387), or visit www.texasveterans.com.
