"Veterans are the ones that have the loudest voices," said VDR trainee and veteran Daniel Gutierrez. "They're the ones that served our country."

A group of volunteer deputy registrars, or "VDRs" in training shared that same patriotic mentality, in the hopes of encouraging veterans to become registered voters.

"It's very important for the veterans to vote, to register to vote, because they're going to be a lot of initiatives that are gonna be affecting veterans so we wanna make sure we capture a group of veterans to vote," said VDR trainee and veteran Bart Naciancenov. "And also, it's a right that we fought for and very few of us exercise it."

"I want to make sure to get veterans registered to vote and understand that we went and fought for this right and this is one of the rights we look forward to, so why not come and practice it when we come home?" said VDR trainee and veteran Omar Duque. "here's issues out there that need, that need attention by our veterans."

"We want their voices to be heard so that we can make some changes around certain areas in the county," Gutierrez.

And while VDRs have the ability to help anyone become a registered voter, this year's focus is on veterans' issues that will be featured on the ballot.

"Veterans took an interest, I believe, in this election and in this process, because it's a constitutional amendment election of course and there are a couple of propositions on the ballot that directly affect veterans," said Cameron County elections administrator Chris Davis. "It gives a push I think and it energizes these veterans to get other veterans out to vote."

And those propositions are one and four. Proposition one allows a property tax exemption to the widows of veterans. Proposition four allows property tax exemptions at the home of a disabled vet.
