UTPA's Annual Viva Engineering Program

UTPA's College of Engineering and Computer Science recently celebrated National Engineers Week.

Nerves began to show as teams of middle school students put their skills to the test during an exciting, but intense competition that had them vying for top prizes. Their assignment was to construct a bridge out of popsicle sticks that could stand the pressure of weight and build a house using different materials that could withstand the force of strong winds.

While the seventh the eighth graders admit these tasks were difficult and challenging, they were also a lot of fun. In fact that's the message UTPA's annual Viva Engineering program hopes to convey to young people considering careers in engineering and other science related fields. The Viva Engineering Design Competition at UTPA actually kicked off National Engineers Week, a time set aside to raise awareness to the community about the critical shortage of people qualified to fill STEM related positions across the country.
