EDINBURG, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — A professor in the department of Mathematics at UTPA has been honored for his outstanding work in research. Here's Sandra Quintanilla with this week's News Center 23 report.
Meet UTPA Math professor Zhijun Qiao. He's known as one of the world's leaders in the area of mathematical physics and even has a number of math models named after him including the "Qiao equation." Dr. Qiao came to UTPA from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, where the best minds in the planet develop and apply science and technology in fields such as national security, space exploration, renewable energy, medicine, nanotechnology and supercomputing. His experience and work at the University have not gone unnoticed. In fact, they've recently earned him this year's 2013 prestigious Faculty Excellence Award for Research.
Dr. Rod Summy, Biology Professor, "He’s very well known in his field and he’s trained a large number of students and used them in his research and has brought a lot of credibility to the University of Texas -Pan American."
Dr. Qiao's research involves applications in fields ranging from telecommunications to turbulence, two monographs and more than 100 articles published in prominent international and national journals. He's also presented at more than 70 conferences across the globe.
Dr. Zhijun Qiao, Math Professor, "This is a really good for our students, particularly for future graduate programs. Right now I am the graduate advisor for math department. I’m pretty sure in the future we will get a PhD program. So if we get a PhD program we definitely need strong faculty in research area. We need to do more deeper research to enhance the entire level of the university."
Dr. Qiao has also been successful in securing hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant funding for his research projects and providing his undergraduate and graduate students many opportunities to work closely with him.
Dr. Rod Summy, Biology Professor, "In all of these he’s used undergraduates and graduates students extensively and has helped them achieve not only graduate with BS degrees but also master of science in mathematics and so on and many of these have published in national and international journals."
It's for these reasons and more that Dr. Qiao's colleagues believe he is very deserving of UTPA's top academic honor in research. I'm Sandra Quintanilla reporting for UTPA and News Center 23.
