A math professor at The University of Texas-Pan American has gone above and beyond for his department and his students over the course of his 12 years at UTPA and because of his dedication he received UTPA's top award for outstanding service. Here's Sandra Quintanilla reporting with this week's News Center 23 UTPA report.

Every day, Dr. Lokenath Debnath strives to go above and beyond in his role as a math professor at UTPA. In fact, his professionalism, hard work and dedication to his students and his department where he formally served as chair for 10 years, is often praised and acknowledged by university administrators. His latest accomplishment, receiving UT Pan Am's prestigious "Faculty Excellence Award for Service", an honor his superiors and colleagues say is very deserving. They believe his unique leadership, exceptional teaching style in the classroom, successful research projects, world known text books he has authored and involvement in prominent international journals, transformed UTPA's math program into one of the best in the state. His expertise is even sought after by educational experts and higher ed institutions around the globe.

John Trant, UTPA College of Science and Mathematics Dean,

"The researchers that he brought in, the research that he has done, the text books that he has written, the editors of several journals, in every way, whether we're talking about service to students, service to department, the college, to his discipline, he's been a major player in all aspects of that."

Debnath is particularly proud of his text books. He uses them to teach his students and receives inquiries from universities worldwide.

"I don't only teach, i also write books for them not only for these students, for the united states and books are used in many, many different countries."

During his 12 year career at UTPA, Debnath is also credited for establishing a program to enhance passing rates of introductory math courses. He also helped lead the creation of a PH.D. program, a math faculty mentor initiative and an external review process for faculty evaluations just to name a few of his accomplishments.

John Trant, UTPA College of Science and Mathematics Dean,

"It's all about the students and the faculty and our progress to enhance mathematical education, mathematical research. This all came from him, his vision, his heart, his personal commitment."

Debnath is also well known for helping educate public school students that math can be fun and to consider pursuing it as a career path.

John Trant, UTPA College of Science and Mathematics Dean

"Dr. Debnath has been critical in driving that, that initiative for people to understand "yes math is fun, math is not arithmetic, mathematics predicts, mathematics explains, mathematics drives wonder" that is his passion, that is what he's been doing for this university, for this community."
