The President of the University of Texas Pan American announced she is retiring at the end of this month.

Blandina Cardenas said in a prepared statement, the last several months have taxed her health and that after four and half years as the university's president it is time for her to move on. Last year Cardenas was anonymously accused of plagiarizing parts of her dissertation. The university launched an investigation into the charges, but UTPA Executive Vice Chancellor David Prior said the inquiry was halted because Cardenas intended to resign.

In 2007 Cardenas repaid more than $7,000 dollars to the university because of funds she used to pay for landscaping services and other work for her home and then billed UTPA for mileage for her commute to work. An audit found Cardenas did not know she was breaking the rules and her last day of employment will be January 30th and a search for her replacement will begin immediately.
