UTPA Celebrates 85 Years of Existence
EDINBURG — The University of Texas Pan American celebrated it's 85th year of existence on Wednesday by holding a ceremony with cake and a proclamation at the Hidalgo County Commissioners Court. The university now offers 56 undergraduate and graduate programs and current UTPA President Dr. Robert Nelsen says the university has come a long way over the years, "We started as just a junior college in 1927, we are standing on the grounds where the first buildings were and it just grown and grown. As of today, my latest numbers are 19,267 students with 70,000 graduates, it has just come tremendously." The university does plan to expand even further over the next ten years with an increase of the student population and adding eight new doctoral programs.
