BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — The split of The University of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College means UTB will lose access to a few of TSC's buildings. So UTB officials are considering ideas to make up the difference and that means trying to acquire additional land.
"If they choose to do what they call an urban campus, which would be right where they are at… they need to have more expansion."
"The mayor says the urban campus would need about an additional 300 acres for the new buildings."
Martinez said this plan would enable UTB to expand not only locally, but globally as well.
"I think we are going to have international students throughout the world…I just think it's part of the international global world we are going to be entering into."
Mayor Martinez said the entire Rio Grande Valley will benefit.
"The aspect of a university or institution certainly... The bigger the better and we certainly have the ability to have more interest, whether there will be grants or scholarships."
Talks continue to finalize these expansion plans. Reporting from Brownsville Abigail Camilo, KVEO Newscenter 23.
