For baseball players at UTB, this scene of an empty diamond is all too familiar. But come 2015, every other athlete in any and all sports programs at the university will be experiencing the same cuts.

"We're here to put the best year together that we can next year, um, to help them put themselves in the best position that they can to move on," said UTB athletic director Todd Lowery.

Right now, UTB sports are ranked in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes. But when the merger with UTPA happens, UTRGV will become a Division I school. And that means there will no longer be a need or any UTB sports.

"They'll be a handful that stay, and probably, a majority, you know, they came here to compete and they want that in their college life, the competition and those kind of things," said Lowery.

"We do have some girls that are barely starting, and they're kind of scared because they don't know what's gonna happen so they can only think about leaving or transferring because I don't that most girls playing volleyball want to quit," said UTB volleyball player Danica Markovic.

But while many are under the impression that most athletes at UTB will go elsewhere to finish out their college career, there may be opportunities for some of them to play Division I ball right here in the Valley.

"The coaching staffs are definitely gonna have to look at both rosters," said Lowery. "I think there's definitely some call athletes here that are more than capable of competing at the Division I level and that are eligible."

But the question of the staying or leaving is one that every athlete at UTB will ultimately have to make soon.

"We do know that it's gonna be over in 2015, so people are gonna have to find a way to transfer or just stay here and try to survive," said Markovic.
