UT Regents approve med school plans
EDINBURG, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — The new medical school has the green light from the University of Texas Board of Regents after approval of a design plan.
The first of several medical school buildings will be built in Lot C of UTPA, at the corner of Sugar Road and Schunior Street.
It will be 88,000 square feet and will cost $54 million. It will be paid out of the permanent university fund. Part of the construction includes demolition of the nearby Lamar Academy.
"That's the main area that's going to be torn down, to make way for a courtyard and a master plan of where the medical school facilities are going to go," Edinburg city manager Ramiro Garza said. "This building is going to be the first building that's going to be built on site. There's going to be others in the future, and we're very much looking forward to that."
The UT system will choose a contractor for the project and it's expected to be completed by the start of the fall 2016 semester.
