UT Board Approves South Texas Location for Medical School, but Funding Unclear
BROWNSVILLE - The regents approved putting a med school in the Valley but failed to allocate any funds for it. But at the same time, the regents directed millions of dollars from a discretionary fund to build a new medical school in Austin. Essentially, the regents say if people in the Valley want a Medical School we'll have to pay for it ourselves. South Texas has the lowest ratio of doctors to patients in the state and the medical school located nearest to the valley is in Monterrey, Mexico.
