Underground Water Leak Causes Road to Cave In

An unusual sight around 6:45 this morning...a school bus drove into a large sinkhole on the corner of Sprague and Sugar in Edinburg.

"The weight of the bus, you know the front tire caved in and then it just started getting a little bigger and bigger," said Irma Garza with the City of Edinburg.

Luckily, there weren't any children on the bus and city crews were able to begin working quickly.

"The problem is there was a cap that fell off an old water line that we have in there, kind of like that was plugged up. That plug came off and we had a water leak underground." said Garza.

City crews had to make the hole deeper to find the leak. Their next step is to cap the water line and fill the hole with sand and cement.

"We got front end loaders, back hoes, excavators. We're gonna bring the whole, our whole equipment out here and we're gonna try to expedite this as fast as we can," said Public Works Director, Ponciano Longoria.

The incident didn't interrupt water service in the surrounding area because the leak came from an old water pipe that wasn't in use.

"We have already met with the school right here next to us, BETA Academy and they are aware of the situation. We do have a traffic control plan in place which would be no traffic coming in off of Sugar onto Sprague," said Garza.

Garza urges anyone who sees water on roadways to call in and report it.
