EDINBURG - Flashing lights and loud music both attracted the attention of students at the UTPA campus. In the middle of the quad, TxDOT reminded students of the consequences of drinking and driving during Labor Day weekend.

"This would be a good lesson for me," said Jorge Valdez. When asked if he has ever driven drunk, he replied, "Yes, I will admit it, I have."

He smiled while he admitted his wrong, unaware that only a few feet away, a family of a drunk driving victim looked on. The Olivares family lost Guillermo Olivares, 18, last February to a drunk driver.

"At 11:09 p.m. they got hit head on by a drunk driver with an alcohol level of .28, which is three and a half time over the legal limit," said Dileny Olivares, Guillermo's sister.

TxDOT reminds students, officers will be out in full force this weekend looking for drunk drivers.
