PEÑITAS, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Authorities found another body near the Rio Grande River by Penitas.
On Wednesday morning, the body of an adult male was discovered near the river between La Joya and Penitas. The body was found about 24 hours after the body of an adult female was recovered from a pond in the same area.
Both victims are said to be in their 20's and have not been identified. Authorities are working to confirm that the victims are undocumented immigrants who died while crossing the border.
"The first part of the investigation is gonna be to try to identify the person and their nationality and we have to reach a point where we can say this is what we believe and this person is an undocumented immigrant that was trying to enter the United States," said JP Rodriguez, spokesperson for the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office.
The area where the bodies were found is popular crossing spot for undocumented immigrants.
In 2012, Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office investigators discovered 19 bodies of suspected immigrants. That number jumped to 25 in 2013, and 16 bodies of suspected immigrants have been found so far this year.
"There's a lot of risks involved when somebody tries to enter the United States," Rodriguez explained. "There's risks when you're in the river and also there's risks of the extreme heat down here."
Rodriguez says there is a strong chance of additional deaths that could result from the current triple-digit temperatures.
"It can pose a risk to anyone, whether it's an undocumented immigrant, whether it's a child or adult. So that's definitely something that just because of the area where we live in, it's gonna be a concern."
Rodriguez says they are waiting on the results of pending autopsies for both victims to determine the exact cause of death.
Neither case is being investigated as a homicide at this time.
