Turkey has recently established several decontamination sites in its southern province of Hatay, which borders Syria, due to alerts following the alleged chemical weapon attacks in Syria.

In Hatay's border town of Yayladagi, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate has established a decontamination unit to deal with any possible chemical threats from Syria.

The unit includes a temporary medical treatment center, which has been converted from an indoor basketball court. The center has three large tents and many simple beds.

According to local experts, the beds are for people injured in potential chemical weapons attacks.

The construction of the decontamination unit, the third of its kind in Hatay, was finished this week, but only a few chemical experts and medical workers are currently using the site.

The Turkish government has also dispatched a large number of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear specialists to the region and distributed gas masks to local residents.

Despite the construction of the decontamination units, some chemical experts say the precautionary measures being taken to deal with potential chemical attacks are still far from sufficient and add that the country does not have any related experience.

The Syrian government has made several public statements stating its chemical weapons would target only foreign invaders, not Syrians.

Turkey is concerned about chemical threats from Syria as it has always supported military intervention to deal with the Syrian crisis.

Many Turkish experts believe Syria would have no time to attack Turkey if any military intervention takes place, but some Turkish politicians are still worried that chemical weapons could fall into hands of terrorists and put the whole world at risk of chemical attacks.
