TSTC Proactive with Campus Security
BROWNSVILLE - Local security experts are weighing in on Thursday deadly shooting on the Virginia Tech campus.
Two people are dead with one of those victims being a campus police officer and the university immediately went on a lockdown status after the incident. Security at Texas State Technical College in Harlingen says preparing for these types of circumstances can be difficult. TSTC Police Chief Aurelio Torres says, "One of the things we have done here at TSTC Harlingen to be proactive is that we have trained all of our employees. They have had to go through a mandated training in what they need to be doing in case something occurs on campus. We also have a behavioral intervention team where we actually aggressively go out there and identify people that could be of danger to themselves or to others and we can intervene before it gets to that point."
The Virginia Tech campus is also the site of the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history back in 2007. That tragedy led to widespread security changes at educational institutions nationwide.
