HARLINGEN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — TSTC officially kicked off the grand opening of its newly designed engineering center today:
"TSTC is a statewide institution," said TSTC Harlingen acting president Dr. Sylvia Garcia. "We serve a statewide mission. So we want to serve industry here in Texas... Having a facility like this to promote our programs to get more students in, because we can serve more students now, it's important for us to do."
"It's gonna give the Valley an opportunity to see what exists here at this school," said TSTC engineering division director Hector Yanez. "It's also gonna give industry a chance to see what's available here for them as well."
Officials gave several speeches about the prominence of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or "STEM", especially in Texas.
"Here, we're trying to meet the demands of the state and the United States of course as well," said Yanez.
A check from Spaw Glass worth $20,000 was presented to the institution for future programs.
The funds will be used for scholarships for students in the Architectural Design and Engineering Graphics Program and other projects that don't have state funding.
Students, faculty, and staff also got a chance to tour some of TSTC's labs to get an inside look at what exactly goes on.
School officials say they hope the new engineering center will better prepare the community for a future in STEM.
"The community is what gives us the energy to go out there and provide a service for the industry," said Yanez.
