A fire struck at a Brownsville landfill on FM 511 where thousands of tires caught fire and crews finally put out the flames.

They spent the entire day battling the fire spraying down the flames and keeping it under control so that it would not spread throughout the landfill. Brownsville Director of Emergency Management, Jeff Johnston says other agencies stepped in to help and representatives from the Utilities Board and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality spent the day on-site monitoring the toxicity in the water run off and the air.

The big concern was the water being sprayed onto the fire could possibly make its way into the nearby water systems which did not happen.
