Top Food Administrator praises BISD food nutrition services
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — The top administrator for the Federal Food Nutrition Services, Audrey Rowe, visited BISD'S Skinner Elementary today. She says the Brownsville school district is really ahead of the game.
"Brownsville has really embraced the..in health eating and healthy lifestyle for students."
One of the most impressive efforts, that's provided positive results, is providing breakfast for students she says.
"The data is starting to show less discipline problems, less trips to the nurse, attention span longer...real changes of what's happening in schools with the implementation of breakfast."
BISD provides 41 thousand meals at breakfast and another 41 thousand at lunch. With the help of state and federal programs, all meals are geared towards helping to not only tackle the childhood obesity problem here in Brownsville, but to also actually teach children about healthy food choices and introduce them to new produce.
"What we want to help them do is now expand, not just for students but for their families and the community."
Several plans are in place in order to expand healthy eating beyond bisd school cafeterias.
"We’re also encouraging schools to develop recipes and...that are affordable."
In addition to talking business with BISD'S food nutrition partners, she also spent a little time talking directly with the students as they ate lunch.
"BISD will add a dinner meal option to their program this fall, more details on that will be released over the summer.
