The big ban on plastic bags goes into effect in about one week.

The reusable shopping bags are environmentally friendly, but can also be dangerous, if you don't take the proper, but very simple, steps to keep your bags clean and bacteria free.

"Most bags should have a label on them giving you instructions on how to maintain your bag clean." said Brownsville’s Public Health Director, Arturo Rodriguez.

Eliminating these germs from your reusable shopping bags is simple and takes just minutes of your time.

Most, you can thrown in the washing machine, some require washing by hand, and for a quick clean, even the disinfectant wipes will do the trick.

It's suggested that you wash these bags in between every trip to the grocery store.

There have also been cross contamination concerns….what if ground beef juices seep out onto your veggies?

City health officials say that shouldn't be a concern for shoppers. Plastic bags won't be completely gone. Grocers will still have thousand on hand to specially wrap certain goods and products before putting them in your reusable bag, adding a shield of protection.

"The ordinance does not ban the wrapping of vegetables, fruits, meats and fish." said Rodriguez.

The plastic bag ban ordinance has been in the works for the last two years and will officially go into effect on Wednesday, January 5th. City commissioners tell News Center 23 while other cities across Texas as talking of similar ordinances; Brownsville is the very first to enact it.
