La Joya police say they got a call from someone saying there was suspicious activity at a empty car lot and police issued a search warrant for the building.

Police searched the building and discovered probably the largest marijuana bust for the department. Bundles and bundles of marijuana weighing nearly a ton and half and seized by the department. Police found out about the smuggling operation from a tipster and once police arrived a person ran away from the scene and the investigation began.

Inside a dark green van police found 81 large bundles of marijuana stacked all the way up to the roof. The van cam from Mexico as smugglers tried to distribute their cargo here in the United States, but they didn't get away with it. A white van was also at the scene and was seized as well with Mexican plates. Police say a lot of illegal operations takes place in the area where the abandoned parking lot is located.

Police say smugglers often paint their vehicles dark and even the windows to hide what is being carried inside. Police are on the hunt for the driver of the van, while the 2,826 pounds of the marijuana will be turned over to federal authorities.

La Joya police are looking into who owns the empty property and if you have any information that could lead to an arrest and want to stay anonymous, you are asked to call La Joya Crime Stoppers at 956.519.8477.
