Tip leads to seizure of nearly 4,000 lbs. of marijuana
HIDALGO COUNTY, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department seized a large shipment of marijuana being transported in a moving rental truck.
On Wednesday, June 19, the sheriff's department received information regarding a possible Penske truck, with South Carolina plates, transporting narcotics in northern Hidalgo County.
A deputy spotted the vehicle and made a traffic stop after the driver disregarded a stop sign at FM 490 and U.S. 281. The driver of the truck consented to a search of the vehicle by a K-9 unit which did give a positive alert for the presence of narcotics.
Deputies found four large crates each containing a large diesel tank and the tanks were opened revealing a total of 418 bundles of marijuana with a total weight of 3,942 lbs.
The driver was released due to his lack of knowledge of what the tanks contained and the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office has teamed up with federal authorities in investigating the origin of the shipment.
