Three suspects arrested in Visa card scam case
WESLACO, TEXAS (NEWS CENTER 23) — Weslaco Police, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal Violent Offender and Fugitive Task Force, have apprehended three suspects that were involved in a pre paid Visa credit card scam.
Throughout the course of the investigation, investigators researched the crime and discovered similar crimes that were committed throughout the states of Texas, and New Mexico. Weslaco Investigators along with assistance from McAllen Police Investigators were able to identify the first suspect, Edward Smith, and obtain warrants for his arrest.
On Monday Jan 21, Weslaco Investigators traveled to Corpus Christi, TX and arrested Smith. Through the interrogation process, Investigators were able to identify the other two suspects in the scam, Jaime Ortiz, 40 yrs old, and Mark Dinn, 29 years old. Smith also admitted to Investigators that they had committed the scam at 61 cities in the three different states: Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Investigators also recovered documented evidence supporting Smiths statements. Smith was later taken before a Weslaco Municipal Court judge where he was given a $600,000.00 bond for two counts of Credit Card Abuse, and one count of Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity. Smith was then taken to the Hidalgo County jail.
Today, the U.S. Marshal Violent Offender and Fugitive Task Force apprehended Mark Dinn, and Jaime Ortiz in the city of Corpus Christ. They will be brought to the Weslaco Municipal court where they will face a judge for charges of Credit Card Abuse. The alleged motif behind the scam was to support the suspect’s drug addictions.
