HIDALGO COUNTY, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Nearly 10,000 mid and upper valley residents woke up without electricity Wednesday morning, after a major power outage affected some of Hidalgo County.
Lee Jones of American Electric Power says, "We had as many as 10-thousand customers out of electricity so that definitely does become an issue."
The outages were caused due to dry conditions, which contaminated insulators and sparked pole fires. Jones says, "The pole fires happen when the conditions are just right and the mix of the mist and the contaminated insulators, so until we get a good hard amount of rain to clean the equipment, this may happen again."
Some of the areas which were affected in Hidalgo County include: Weslaco, South McAllen, Pharr, Edinburg, Donna, and Progreso.
Meanwhile, AEP says they will continue to work on restoring electricity for those customers who still don't have power.
