HARLINGEN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — Education was the topic of conversation today when Senator Wendy Davis toured around the Engineering Center of Texas State Technical College. Davis listened to stories from students about their educational backgrounds, which lead them to where they are today.
Davis talked about one of her education-based proposals, which focuses on education funding, maintaining quality teachers in Texas and dual enrollment.
"A student who shows promise and who wants to take advantage of doing duel credit or early college high school should be given every opportunity possible to make that happen," said Davis.
But her focus wasn't solely on the state of Texas in general. Davis also talked about her two main goals for the Rio Grande Valley if she becomes governor:
"Most certainly education of course, and also strengthening the economic vibrancy here," said Davis.
Davis also said some educational institutions in the Rio Grande Valley should lead by example for the rest of the state.
"Here in the Texas State technical college in the Harlingen campus, they are working with employers to determine what the needs are so that they can match student skills and graduates with those programs," said Davis. "We need to do more of that."
But regardless of whether they agree with her, more people at TSTC became aware of Davis's intentions today.
"I think what she's doing with education is very very important especially since a lot of people in the Valley come from first generation of college," said TSTC student Robert Magallan.
"Her visit here opened up some eyes," said division director of TSTC's Engineering College, Hector Yanez. "You know, I think people are now more aware of what her focus is gonna be in the next few years."
