Local Mexican officials say it's still safe to travel into Matamoros, but people need to be cautious and take all preventive methods to stay healthy. With the number of deaths already reported in México, the fear of contracting the deadly influenza rises, but for us in the Brownsville/Matamoros region, officials say there is no need to panic just yet. “The most important thing is that we don't have any reported case at this border region.” Mexican Cconsul in Brownsville, Victor Treviño, has been in constant communication with Mexican health officials and is getting the latest updates on the Swine Flu. “Yes I’m scared but I have to go! I need to go.” No one fears the new virus. Modesto Guerrero and Dolores Garcia are going to take all precautionary methods to prevent from falling ill. Guerrero plans to wear a face mask tomorrow and will keep it on until it's safe to remove it. “We have to be aware and prepared about this flu.” At this time, Treviño says it's still safe to go into Matamoros. Avoiding handshakes or big crowds are the best way to stay healthy. The Mexican Consulate is also handing out brochures that have everything you need to know about the potentially deadly virus. If you have questions about the swine flu, you can call the Mexican Health Department at: (01088) 123-1010 / 565- 8111 / 553-3553.
