Driver survives 30 foot crash into Brooklyn construction pit.

A woman driving an SUV plunged into a construction pit in Brooklyn Wednesday after she clipped a bicyclist.

The driver was traveling in a Toyota Highlander SUV at about 10 a.m. when she hit the cyclist and appeared to lose control of her vehicle.

"She went between two parked cars, hit the sidewalk, hit the fence, hit the barricade and flew 30 feet down," said Aaron Mellon, who witnessed the crash. "She crashed headfirst in the car, then flipped...and she walked out alive."

Neighbor Omar David believes the driver "got scared" when she clipped the cyclist and "instead of hitting the brakes, she hit the floor."

No one was on site of the new construction project, which has been awaiting financing for months.

"It could have been a lot worse," said Mellon. "There was a lot of people working here in days past. Now, there was nobody, luckily so."

Emergency responders took the driver from the scene.

She was conscious and talking, witnesses said.

Police consider the crash an accident with no serious injuries.
