Suspects Involved in Deputy Shooting Arraigned on Additional Charges
HIDALGO COUNTY - Two suspects involved in the shooting of a sheriff's deputy, that left another suspect dead, faced additional charges on Wednesday morning.
Carlos Zavala and Juan Ignacio Hernandez Jimenez were both charged with three counts of aggravated kidnapping and two counts of criminal attempted capital murder. Police say the men kidnapped a family prior to the shooting, that landed a sheriff's deputy in the hospital with several gunshot wounds. Even though neither of the men pulled the trigger, police say they were directly associated with the incident. Both men received a $3.5 million dollar bond and the sheriff's department is conducting four investigations into the shootings.
So far, police have arrested about a half dozen suspects and they say they're still not done. One of the suspects died from a gunshot wound to the head and another man, who was shot several times, is in the hospital and expected to recover within the next few days.
The sheriff says he will also be charged with kidnapping and attempted capital murder. Police say this is the first confirmed incident of spillover violence in Hidalgo county.
