Authorities in Hidalgo County are investigating an early morning drive-by shooting that left one of the alleged gunmen dead in a car crash just south of the crime scene.

It happened this morning at approximately 3:30 a.m. on North Mayberry Road, north of rural McAllen.

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a shooting reported at a residence in that area.  One person told officials he saw a grey car parked in front of his house.  That's when shots were fired and the vehicle sped away going southbound.

Shortly after, authorities received a second call of a traffic accident involving a grey car that crashed into a tree just south of where the shooting took place.

Deputies discovered a dead body next to the car along with a seriously injured individual.  They also found one handgun and an assault rifle at the scene.

Two additional suspects trying to run away were detained by deputies.

Preliminary investigation does indicate that these four men in the grey car are connected to the drive by shooting.  Authorities must wait on ballistic tests and other evidence to confirm this.

Officials say the driver of that grey vehicle will likely face murder charges because someone was killed while trying to flee the location where the four suspects had previously committed a felony.
