Weslaco police have arrested a 19 year-old man who's accused of shooting a dog during a botched robbery attempt.

It happened outside a Stripes convenience store, Saturday at the corner of Business 83 and West Gate drive. Ronnie James Villapando pulled a gun on 34 year-old Leon Escalon pointing it to his head. Escalon's dog barked at Villapando, who then shot at the dog, which then ran away leaving a trial of blood and hasn't been found as of yet. Villapando was arrested on Monday and remains in the Hidalgo county jail on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and evading arrest charges.
