Suspect Sentenced to Life in Prison for Killing of Rio Hondo Teacher
BROWNSVILLE - A chilling confession at a Cameron county courtroom as Daniel Flores Lopez told the court how he killed Sonia Perez on March 31st.
Lopez confessed that he waited in the back of Perez's van waiting for her to get out of school. When she got in the van and started driving. He said he steered the van off the road and then shot her twice on the side of the head and once in her back. Lopez also said that her husband had paid him $2,500 dollars to kill her. The confession came as part of a plea deal to serve life in prison instead of possibly getting the death penalty.
Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos said, "We are pleased because it's a huge case in our community and the community is concerned with it and they want resolution to these cases." The judge sentenced Lopez to life in prison without parole.
