Suspect Charged in Murder of Wife and Sister-In-Law

WESLACO — The man accused of killing his wife and sister-in-law has confessed to authorities and faced a judge on Monday for the crimes he committed. Raul Garza faced a judge and was charged with capital murder of Veronica Rivera and the rape and murder of Rivera's 12 year-old sister. Hidalgo Sheriff Lupe Trevino believes that Garza was high on cocaine at the time of the crimes and stated, "During the murder and the rape, three children, ages 5, 6 and six months-old, were in the bedrooms and they never left the bedroom actually. After the homicides, he takes care of the 5 and 6 year-old by feeding them, but not allowing them to leave the room. The 6 year-old actually took care of the 6 month-old baby for a little over 30 hours."
All the children have been medically treated, interviewed and taken into custody by Child Protective Services. Garza is also charged with kidnapping his neighbor, Andrea Tafolla, and the judge denied bond due to the nature of the crime.
