Engineers inspect Washington Monument as the prepare plans for repairing earthquake damage.

Engineers rappelled from the top of the Washington Monument Tuesday so they could inspect damage from last month's earthquake.

The 5.8 magnitude quake caused cracks and other damage to the exterior of the monument.

It's been closed since.

Stones, mortar and other debris also fell inside.

The inspections will last about five days.

After that engineers will complete repairs.

There's no projected date when the monument may reopen to visitors.
